If you’re anything like me you’ve got big dreams to fulfill and plenty of goals to achieve. You’re a go-getter who is always wanting to achieve in life.  And yet, perhaps, you have found yourself in a space n which you are not achieving all of what you think you should be.

It is frustrating and disheartening to have the desire to do more or achieve at greater levels, knowing you are capable, but for some reason not being able to pull it off.  You ask yourself, “What is going on, why haven’t I experienced the success I want in this or these areas?

There are a plethora of things that can hold us back from the success we want.  I’m going to share five with you now, but I’m going to present them in the form of questions so you can answer for yourself if you are making these mistakes.

  1. Are you setting your goals too low?

Michelangelo said, “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.”  When it comes to living a life that is filled with purposed power, and fulfillment, many of us think the goals we set will pave the way , only to be disappointed when we aren’t satisfied after we’ve achieved or goal.  What’s the problem?  Is it that we don’t want it bad enough, or is there a problem with the goal itself?

I propose that it is often the latter, in the form of setting the goal too low.  The reality is that too often we get our goals far below what will actually satisfy our feelings of being successful and fulfilled.  Instead what we often do is choose goals that ideal make us happy thinking about achieving them.  There is a difference between experiencing a happiness that is temporary in out thoughts and experiencing real fulfillment and satisfaction from achieving a goal that is able to result in them.

This is key, setting goals that are high enough to bring the results you actually want to experience.  Listen, if you want to experience the satisfaction of achieving and A in a particular class, you can’t offer C work and expect to get and A.  If you have a business through which you want to secure fifteen new clients, you have to do the work that will secure those fifteen clients and not just enough to secure ten.

It’s easier to go for the C because after all it is a passing and satisfactory grade.  It will get you to the next class.  That’s good enough isn’t it?  That’s what you really want, right?  What really matters is that you keep going, right? Wrong!  If what you really want is the satisfaction of that A, that’s what really matters.  It’s the same when it comes to those fifteen clients.  Ten clients may bring more than enough in income, but if fifteen new clients is what you really want then that income should not be enough.

What’s important, is that you don’t allow the lesser to be enough.

 2.  Do you prepare to achieve?

Well, this is a no brainer, but believer it or not, so many expect to achieve great things in life without preparing to do so.  Are you resting on what you believe you already possess or know and what you’ve already done, rather than pushing yourself to learn more so you can do what you’ve never done before?

Opportunities are given to us each and every day, but often times we are not ready for them.  Proof of this is that we don’t walk through the open doors and perhaps don’t even see them.  We are often so not ready, so unprepared.  How can you possibly see the good thing one to you if you haven’t moved yourself mentally or experientially into the position to see?

It is a great travesty to set goals to achieve, but not have worked on whatever you need to work on to achieve your goal.  You have to prepare before your opportunity comes, and you have to prepare in order to be able to do and achieve.  You do realize that you can do a lot of things, be oh so busy, and still never get done what you said you wanted to get done because that’s not what you focused on.

People live a lifetime and in the end look back in regret because they didn’t achieve what they believe they could have if they had worked and prepared do so.

What are the steps you need to take in order to achieve what you want in life?  What are you doing now to be who you want to be, do what you want to be doing, and get what you want to get?  Are you waiting for something to happen that won’t unless you do something?  Are you one of those people missing out on achieving your dreams because you aren’t ready from them?

3.  Do you ask for help when you need it?

Let’s face it, there are definitely times when we need the help of others to achieve at a level that we can be satisfied with.  Why is asking for help so difficult?  For some reason too many too often act as if asking someone for assistance somehow means that they are less than enough.  Asking for help seems to say that one doesn’t believe they can accomplish something alone, and that’s a problem.  It may be true that you can’t accomplish what you want alone, but that’s not the problem.  The problem is that you think that you think it is a problem when in fact it is not.  There is nothing wrong with asking for help, and especially if it’s going to help you achieve what you want.

I guess you have to ask yourself what’s more important to you, to achieve or to achieve alone?

4.  Do you allow others to rain on your parade?

Most certainly one of the things that keeps many in the underachieving category is that they care too much about what others think, to the point where they allow their  opinions to influence them.. Have you ever had what you thought was a fantastic idea, shared it with someone, one to have them say it wasn’t a fantastic idea, and you decide not to do it?  Yeah, we’ve all done it a one time or another.

It doesn’t matter how old you are.  You can be twenty or you can be fifty, and still make the mistake of letting someone else’s opinion sway you into inaction.

  5.  Is your life filled with clutter?

What is the definition of clutter?  Clutter can be defined as a bunch of stuff that crowds or disorders.  When you have a lot disordered unnecessary stuff in your life, it can keep you from achieving at the level you could without it.  It may seem that having a lot of things so always a plus but it can be a problem when those things are distractions that keep you from achieving your best.

Did you know that having an office that is filled with clutter can stop you from getting your important work done?  With all of the clutter, you may not be able to find what you need when you need it, and that’s a problem.  Imagine that there are some people who have so much stuff to clear away the they have to spend too much time doing so, and miss their opportunities to do the other things that are purposeful.

One of the things that can be a challenge is letting go of things that you’ve been doing for a really long time, to make way for some new things that will enhance your life.  How do you add the new, the desired, and the necessary, when you are already doing too much?  You can’t.  Well, you can’t, and have great successes.  You have to de-clutter and eliminate the unnecessary.  Those things may have worked for you before, but will they help you to achieve in the future?

Let me share a secret with you, what you’ve achieved in the past is done, but what you have yet to achieve may depend on what you are willing to release from your life.  That’s right, what you are able to add to your life may very well be dependent upon what you are able to release.
